Luis Enrique Not Confident With Luis Suarez Card Appeal
Luis Enrique is not confident that Barcelona will win the appeal for the red card given to Luis Suarez at the end of the 1-1 draw between Barca and Atletico Madrid.
In a big match like this one, there has to be controversy and there certainly was when Barcelona and Atletico Madrid met for a spot in the Copa Del Rey final. Luis Suarez apparently fouled Atletico Madrid’s Koke near the end of the match. For this challenge, Suarez was shown a red card and will miss the final (barring the results of the appeal). The match ended 1-1 which is why Barca will be in the Copa Del Rey final in a couple of months. However, El Pistolero still thinks that he is innocent and didn’t foul Koke.
Despite Suarez being suspended for the moment, Barcelona can and will appeal the booking. They are doing this so that the play can be reviewed and hopefully overturned. If this is the case, Suarez will be able to play in the final. However, Barca have a history of not winning appeals for these situations. Manager Luis Enrique talked about this controversial red card and the appeal after the match ended.
“I’m in agreement with appealing, but if you look at the past you will see what good appeals have been for us,” said Luis Enrique after the game. “The final is not until May, there’s a long time to think about that [who replaces Suarez]. It frustrates me that players on my team miss finals, but at the end of the day it’s something which happens in football. The referee felt that both Suarez and Roberto deserved two yellow cards. I was about to take Roberto off because of the booking he had. He’s made three challenges and he’s been given two cautions. We felt he could maybe get a second, but we didn’t react quick enough.”
Overall, Barcelona must be ready for the bad (or hopefully good) news. There are many options that can play the Luis Suarez role. One name to look out for is Paco Alcacer. If Suarez misses the final, Paco will be called upon in a big spot. This would be the chance to prove the doubters wrong for the embattled forward. Luckily, the former Valencia man broke the goal drought that he had to start his career. Hopefully, he begins to trend in the right direction if Luis Suarez misses the final or any other match.
